Our autumn journey through Grand New England sheds new light on American history and culture throughout Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire – a classic New England foliage tour.

Legendary Journeys and Adventures

An autumn fall foliage tour paints New England landscapes with bold, Impressionist colors that surprise, delight, energize and mesmerize, and awaken the visionary in you.

This excursion through Grand New England offers more than the visual excitement of a fall foliage tour. Enjoy exclusive filmed vignettes by filmmakers Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan that share personal stories and take you behind-the-scenes of their films. See American history in a new light in places where it was made, then re-made by poets, painters and icon-makers... the Revolutionary heart of Concord, the Berkshire retreats of Norman Rockwell and Edith Wharton, and the Gilded Age mountain resort at Bretton Woods. Travel through lush forests and fertile fields sweet with fragrant air, rich in tradition and brimming with antique charm. Search out the elusive soul of New England from Boston to Bar Harbor, from fishing boats to the summit of Mount Washington and the wilderness of Acadia National Park... in the taste of fresh lobster and maple syrup, and in the dazzled eye of the beholder. A schooner cruise on Frenchman Bay

Day 9

Back to the "age of sail" with a schooner cruise on Bar Harbor's Frenchman Bay

Along the rugged Maine coast lies the legendary town of Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island – a summer playground in the late 19th century for families like the Rockefellers, Astors and Vanderbilts. Here, you’ll cruise scenic Frenchman Bay aboard a traditional wooden schooner, experiencing the picturesque coves, islands, lighthouses, and seaside estates with all the romance of a windjammer under sail.

Acadia via horse-drawn carriage

Day 10

A carriage ride through Acadia National Park on Mr. Rockefeller's roads

In 1913, John D. Rockefeller, Jr. was alarmed by the prospect of automobiles ruining his beloved Acadia National Park in Maine. A skilled horseman himself, he wanted visitors to be able to travel on motor-free byways via horse and carriage into the heart of Mount Desert Island. So the industrialist and philanthropist planned and paid for a system of some 45 miles of rustic, broken-stone carriage roads – quite challenging for cars – to be laid down throughout the park. Rockefeller himself participated in the construction, from aligning the roads to supervising the placement of the large granite coping stones, affectionately dubbed “Rockefeller’s Teeth.” As you travel these woodland paths by horse-drawn carriage, keep a lookout for these distinctive stones… and for blueberries!

Omni Mount Washington Resort

Nights 6 and 7

Gilded Age opulence in New Hampshire's White Mountains

Surrounded by the White Mountains in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, the Omni Mount Washington Resort is one of New England’s last grand Gilded Age resort hotels still in operation. Since 1902, this palatial hotel has been a magnet for presidents, robber barons and celebrities; Babe Ruth and Thomas Edison, for example, loved to play golf here. In 1944, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund were established right here in the Mount Washington Resort’s Gold Room. This historic hotel’s architectural grandeur is well-preserved, and the mountain scenery is stunning no matter the season.

We enjoyed this trip more than any we have taken. We loved watching the whales, visiting the whaling museum and seeing beautiful mansions.
