Cultural journeys and expeditions

Sicily, the Amalfi Coast & Rome was one of the earliest small ship cruises in our Mediterranean portfolio – and for 2025, we're setting sail once more. Explore stories of antiquities steeped in history and mythology, experience a myriad of natural wonders, and spend two nights in Malta, two nights in Rome, at premier hotels.

They've been conquered in turn by different invaders, with some, like Malta and Sicily, boasting a history of occupation that dates back thousands of years. Once you see the sensational seaside views from the cliff-top, Maltese city of Mdina, walled since medieval times, you'll discover why so many visitors were eager to claim this island gem for their own. Sicily, inhabited since the Ice Age, was a favorite trophy for the Greeks in the 5th and 6th centuries BC, followed in turn by a succession of rulers, including the Romans, the Vandals, the Arabs, the Normans, the Swabians, the House of Aragon and the Bourbons. The landscapes on this large Mediterranean island have proven to be fertile ground for vineyards, citrus groves, almond and cherry trees – and beaches. While its conquerors had their own reasons for turning Sicily into one of their colonies, travelers today revel in the archaeological treasures they left behind. You'll see an ancient Greek theatre and temple in Siracusa, a Roman renovation in Taormina, an open-air Arab casbah in Palermo, and Punic and Norman fortifications in medieval Erice – mingling with magnificent frescoed duomos, grand piazzas, Baroque balconies and terraced towns that speak volumes about Sicilian life, past and present. And spend two nights in the heart of Rome for the ultimate "Roman Holiday"... Read Less

Tauck Exclusive – Vatican Museums after hours

Explore the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel after-hours... without the crowds

Founded by Pope Julius II in the early 1500s, the Vatican Museums display classical and religious works of art collected by the Popes throughout the centuries. Combined with the Sistine Chapel, they're visited by around six million people a year, ranking among the most-visited art museums in the world. On your exclusive, after-hours, guided visit, you can explore the Candelabra Gallery, the Map Gallery, the Tapestries, and the Sistine Chapel… all without the usual crowds. So you'll be able to take your time to contemplate the inspirational treasures before you – including the spectacular Biblical frescoes on the ceiling, which took Michelangelo four years to paint, standing on a scaffold... and changed the course of western art.

Phoenicia Hotel Malta

An Art-Deco treasure revitalized for the 21st century

Considered a Maltese national treasure, the five-star Phoenicia Hotel Malta, built in the Art-Deco style in the 1930s, was nearly complete when World War II intervened, delaying its opening until 1947, when it began a long reign as one of the most distinctive hotels in the Mediterranean; its guest list has included royals, celebrities and heads-of-state. This iconic hotel recently emerged from an extensive restoration to take its place among the leading properties of the 21st century.

If you are searching for a trip that combines the pleasure of camaraderie and the joy of a cultural experience, look no further.

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Italy and Malta; however, you will not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, please contact a consulate or embassy of Italy and Malta to determine what travel documentation is required.
Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

You will be issued a boarding card, which you must present before embarking the ship in each port. This security measure also ensures that only Tauck guests are permitted onboard.

International maritime security guidelines require that your passport information be provided to us prior to your embarkation. You need to provide this information to us as soon as you book your cruise or boarding may be denied. Once you board the cruise ship, your passport may be held by the ship's purser to facilitate clearance procedures as required by each port of call until you disembark. It is recommended guests carry a government-issued photo ID while ashore.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen. While ashore, it is highly recommended guests carry government-issued photo identification.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.
