    In springtime, the famous villa and gardens in the village of Giverny is awash in pink and green, adorned in wisteria, azalea and water lilies, and basked in dappled sunlight reminiscent of the works of its 43-year resident, painter Claude Monet. Our exclusive pre-opening visit to the pioneer Impressionist's retreat shows you the artist's home as he lived it and painted it. Monet's pink stucco house gives the impression that his family of 10 still lives there; its rooms showcase private furnishings, and his collection of Japanese prints adorn walls throughout. Walk along pathways bordered with nasturtiums, hollyhocks, hybrid lilies or snapdragons, and go through the tunnel that leads to the Water Garden and the Japanese Bridge.

    Tour the halls of the former royal residence

    We take mirrors pretty much for granted today, but back in King Louis XIV's time, they were very expensive, which may be why he had the Hall of Mirrors (with 357 individual mirrors) built in his Château de Versailles. Frankly, he was a bit of a show-off. Although no one really knows for sure, historians estimate that it may have cost the "Sun King" (and therefore the people of France) more than $2 billion (in today's US dollars) to build his over-the-top palace in the town of Versailles outside Paris. Prepare to be dazzled when your guide takes you inside the palatial estate on a visit to Versailles.

    For 90+ years, the Tauck family has had a passion for sailing — aboard small ships and yachts at sea, riverboats along great inland waterways, and at home on the rivers and lakes of Connecticut and New York. When we began blending our land experience with our strong passion for cruising in our first European river cruise back in 1992, we knew that no "ordinary" river cruise experience would do for our guests. We wanted them to travel Europe's rivers in the same beyond-the-ordinary Tauck style they experienced on our land trips. With that in mind, we searched to find a company to partner with that would share our values and our commitment to "do the right thing" by our guests... and found it in another family-owned company, Scylla. Together, we crafted a river cruise experience that was ahead of its time and inspired by the destinations we explore.
